This was already done and was quite popular. Can already say that nhing tournaments will be kind of dead, unless everyone gets their friends involved.

Some guy used to organize almost daily dh duel arena tournaments where people would throw in whatever amount of cash/items they want and it actually ended up as a good amount for the total pot.
